'Wasn't That Special' Season Eighteen Clips Package
As always, for those who have signed up for the podcast at the Executive Producer level, we send out notable video and newspaper clips that aided us in preparing for the episode. Below are some of the Saturday Night Live sketches and media clips we reference throughout the episode, to enhance the listening process.
So please help keep the podcast advertisement-free and upgrade to the Executive Producer level, which will keep these emails coming in the future!
(Although if you want to support us at a lower level and want to just hear the shows, you can do that, too!)
Here are some of the materials we discuss throughout the Season Eighteen episode:
Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker
What else is there to say about this? On the Mount Rushmore of SNL sketches.
Hub’s Gyros
We liked the juice.
Magic Fish Town Hall
Almost certainly a Jack Handey contribution. One of Scot’s favorites of the year.
Superman’s Funeral
Chris Farley showed up in the sketch after this one still green from playing the Hulk. They couldn’t get the makeup off of him fast enough.
Stay Outta My Business
A great performance by Julia Sweeney, playing both sweet and tough. It is what she was best at.
Focus on Beauty
Christian liked this one a lot more than Scot. But Farley’s restraint is a welcome curveball. The audience expects him to erupt at any point, but he keeps it pent up, barely under the surface.
Wayne’s World - Clinton Election
Near the end, Wayne and Garth make a joke about Chelsea Clinton’s looks - at the time, she was only 12 years old. Hillary Clinton complained about the joke, so it has been edited out of subsequent airings - you can see in this video, it briefly skips where the cut was made.
Jiffy Express
Black Co-Workers
Some strong racial humor here.
Prince Charles as a Tampon
An actual scandal that took place. But this is most notable because it is Dana Carvey’s final headlining sketch before he left the show mid-season. (He would be back to host in Season 20.)
Wilson Countersink Flanges
The joke is the dense technical language, a trick Dan Aykroyd loved back in his days on the show.
Cajun Man
Even in his third year on the show, Adam Sandler’s best bits were on Weekend Update.
Cluckin’ Chicken
Opera Man Meets His Brother
Jack McManus’ Bar
Everyone who knew Chris Farley will tell you that in addition to his yelling and physical comedy, he could have been a strong dramatic actor. This is one of the rare bits where you can see how they got that impression.
Bob Roberts Book Burning
We bring you both the good and the bad. Watch this and try to find the “joke” in this bit. It is nowhere to be found. This will always be remembered as the episode in which Sinead O’Connor tore up a photo of the Pope - it should be remembered as one of the worst episodes in six years.
Of course, the big news from this season of the show was Sinead O’Connor’s antics, which caused a national furor:
Which led to next week’s host, Joe Pesci, having his say on the matter:
And further led to O’Connor being booed off the stage at a subsequent Bob Dylan tribute:
And also led columnists to somehow link O’Connor’s disrespect of the Pope to the growing AIDS epidemic:
Also, Phil Hartman (probably jokingly, but…maybe not?) agrees he is the funniest man on television:
A Los Angeles Times critic thought SNL was one of the few things worth watching on NBC in 1992:
