'Wasn't That Special' Season 42 Clips Package
As always, for those who have signed up for the podcast at the Executive Producer level, we send out notable video and newspaper clips that aided us in preparing for the episode. Below are some of the Saturday Night Live sketches and media clips we reference throughout the episode, to enhance the listening process.
Please help keep the podcast advertisement-free and upgrade to the Executive Producer level, which will keep these emails coming in the future!
(Although if you want to support us at a lower level and want to just hear the shows, you can do that, too!)
Here are some of the materials we discuss throughout the Season Forty-Two episode. It’s all all-time great season, so buckle up:
Black Jeopardy! with Tom Hanks
One of the most nuanced, original political sketches in show history.
Election Night with Dave Chappelle
Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton Town Hall Debate
All the debate sketches this year worked, and this is the best.
Sean Spicer Press Conference
You can hear the audience start to figure out it’s Melissa McCarthy. When they do, they start roaring.
David S. Pumpkins
No questions.
Live Report
Essentially the debut for both Mikey Day and Alex Moffatt and they both crush it.
Dog Translator
World’s Most Evil Invention
The Rock took a lot of heat for this one. But it’s the show taking a chance, and it pays off.
Dawn Lazarus, Weather Woman
With three episodes left in her SNL career, Vanessa Bayer unveils one of her best recurring characters.
RKO Movie Set
Effectively Bayer’s last sketch. It’s silly, but a worthy send-off.
Wells for Boys
Written by staff writer Julio Torres, who brought an entirely new and welcome sensibility to the show.
Amazon Echo for Seniors
Louis C.K. Monologue
Even some of the monologues were great this season.
Thank You, Scott
While the show is always accused of having a liberal bias, a number of sketches this year ridiculed progressive virtue signaling. Including:
And:
The Bubble
Birthday Clown
A Bobby Moynihan classic in his final season.
A Sketch for the Women
Zoo Pornographer
Girl at a Bar
Totino’s Pizza Rolls with Kristen Stewart
Rachel from Friends
Bedroom
New cast member Melissa Villaseñor had chops, and this is the first time she really got to show them off.
This season had one very interested viewer:
When Kate McKinnon took the first few minutes of the post Trump-election episode to sing “Hallelujah” as Hillary Clinton, the show received a lot of criticism for its bias. But it received some praise, too:
Thanks to the election, ratings soared this season:
The Oregonian listed its favorite SNL political impressions:
The New Yorker discussed the Limits of Trump Mockery
TIME: Why Saturday Night Live is More Important Than Ever
A number of former SNL employees went through their favorite sketches for Rolling Stone:
For the Washington Post, Al Franken listed his 10 favorite political sketches.
The show tried to spin Weekend Update off into a weekly prime-time show, a la Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. It didn’t last.
Kentuckians got upset at a joke from the Dave Chappelle “Election Night” sketch suggesting their state is where a lot of America’s racists live.
Why I Don’t Watch SNL Anymore. (Hint: It’s too liberal.)
