'Wasn't That Special' Season 36 Clips Package
Editor’s Note: Congrats to Wasn’t That Special subscriber Bronwyn Douwsma for being mentioned in this Wall Street Journal piece on sleuths who try to figure out the authorship of SNL sketches. So cool!
Also, apologize again for the late drop of this post - as always, real life and travel often intervenes.
But as always, for those who have signed up for the podcast at the Executive Producer level, we send out notable video and newspaper clips that aided us in preparing for the episode. Below are some of the Saturday Night Live sketches and media clips we reference throughout the episode, to enhance the listening process.
Please help keep the podcast advertisement-free and upgrade to the Executive Producer level, which will keep these emails coming in the future!
(Although if you want to support us at a lower level and want to just hear the shows, you can do that, too!)
Here are some of the materials we discuss throughout the Season Thirty Six episode:
Bronx Beat
The New Boyfriend Talk Show
There are about five killer laughs in this bit from the Jane Lynch episode:
What’s That Name?
The first installation of what would become a recurring bit - John Mulaney wrote it and would bring it back when he became a host.
3-Way / I Just Had Sex / Jack Sparrow
The Digital Shorts were the highlight of this season, including
Ladies Who Lunch
Basically a relaunch of Kristen Wiig’s “Penelope” character, but it works.
i-Sleep Pro / Once Daily Estro-maxx
This season had good commercials:
And commercials you will never, ever see on the show again.
Stefon on Mother’s Day
Always great.
Moisturizing Facial Cream and Rock-a-Billy Lady Party
This one is a weird slow burner but rewards watching all the way through. Really pays off.
ESPN Classic: Ladies’ Shot Put
Will Forte returned to SNL for a Twinkle and Stink bit, and as the show often does with recurring characters, they took a famous person and made them into a carbon copy.
Birthing Class
There was sharp division on the podcast about this one. Christian loved all the Tina Fey touches while Scot thought it was weird and gross. Maybe both are right?
El Shrinko
In 2010, Sesame Street posted a video of Cookie Monster auditioning to host SNL. It included a MacGruber bit, a few Weekend Update jokes, and a musical number from a special guest.
After years of Fred Armisen mocking him on the show, New York Governor David Paterson got to visit and exact some revenge.
During the season, Fred Armisen’s side project, Portlandia, debuted.
Jane Lynch was evidently excited about hosting SNL? Good to know!
That year, former cast member Nora Dunn talked with Madison, Wisconsin entertainment reporter Rob Thomas (Substack: Not That Rob Thomas) about her tenure on the show, telling him former cast mate Victoria Jackson “did not belong on SNL.”
