'Wasn't That Special' Season 32 Clips Package
As always, for those who have signed up for the podcast at the Executive Producer level, we send out notable video and newspaper clips that aided us in preparing for the episode. Below are some of the Saturday Night Live sketches and media clips we reference throughout the episode, to enhance the listening process.
Please help keep the podcast advertisement-free and upgrade to the Executive Producer level, which will keep these emails coming in the future!
(Although if you want to support us at a lower level and want to just hear the shows, you can do that, too.)
Here are some of the materials we discuss throughout the Season Thirty-Two episode:
Dick in a Box
“Lazy Sunday” walked so Dick in a Box could one day fly. The best bit of the season and an instant viral sensation on the internet. (More on this below.)
Blizzard Man
Peyton Manning for United Way
Very rarely has a sketch changed the way a celebrity has been viewed by the public more than this one.
Buying Beer
One of Christian’s top six sketches of the year. Builds and builds. A forgotten Samberg classic.
Nancy Pelosi on San Francisco Values
Exhibit number one that Kristen Wiig’s career on the show was about to take off.
The Platinum Lounge
Alec Baldwin joins the “Platinum Lounge” for people who have hosted the show 12 times.
Bronx Beat
Maya Rudolph’s best recurring character.
Haunted House
Finally, a good fart sketch.
Bitch Slap Method
Take a good look, because you are never seeing something like this on the show again.
Body Fuzion
It’s all style, but a fun ‘80s throwback.
Business Meeting with Rainn Wilson
Sloths!
Chris Rock Predicts the 2008 Election
Rock wasn’t even there to promote anything - he just had a good bit about the potential of the first black president ready to go. And he called it!
Season 32 saw a big change from the previous season, most notably Tina Fey’s exit from the Weekend Update desk:
The changes didn’t seem to impress critic (and co-author of the seminal SNL book Live From New York with James Andrew Miller) Tom Shales, who complained there is no talent on the show like Will Ferrell had been in the past. He says Kristen Wiig’s range “has so far not been demonstrated” and bemoaned the show’s “blandness.”
After the season opener, two critics at Toronto’s National Post ran a diary of watching the Season 32 debut. Sample critique: “SNL needs to get its head out of its ass.”
While previous seasons had seen some popular digital shorts, the 2006 Christmas special had one that took it to a new level. “Dick in a Box” became an immediate viral hit, in large part because people could go online to see the sketch uncensored:
The word “dick” wasn’t the only affront to taste according to some critics. Scott Collins from the Los Angeles Times took offense to the show’s use of the term “Dirty Sanchez” and “fluffer.”
And, of course, 2006 was a big year for former SNL writer Tina Fey, who left to start her own show:
