Here are some of the materials we discuss throughout the Season Thirty episode:
Reinhold Investments
The script says “Reinhold Investments,” but you will most likely know this as the killer sketch in which Will Forte yells “OOOOOOH NOOOOO” over and over again. They tried to bring this character back later in the season, but it wasn’t nearly as good as this one.
Rice Confirmation
A decent sketch that really begins cooking when Amy Poehler shows up as California Senator Barbara Boxer.
The Best of T.T. and Mario
Worth watching simply for the reaction shots of Poehler’s face after she hears the ribald T.T. and Mario songs.
Monkeys Throwing Poop at Celebrities
Before you watch it, you think you know where it’s going. But it takes a clever left turn, making the sketch about the buildup rather than the monkey actually throwing poop (although you get some of that, too).
Airport Security Search
In the first three decades of the show, some version of this bit has been done at least three times. But none as well as Amy Poehler does it.
The Falconer: The Switch
There is no bad Falconer sketch. Yet.
Christmas Song with the Muppets
Finally, 30 years after they debuted on SNL, the Muppets get a good sketch. It’s adorable.
The New Trump Family
Donald Trump had hosted an episode of SNL in Season 29, and they ridicule him and his new wife, Melania, in this bit. Paris Hilton exceeds our very low expectations and actually does a pretty decent Melania.
Donald Trump for Domino’s
The show frequently cast Trump as an undisciplined huckster. Where would they get that idea?
The Art Dealers
Woomba
The best commercial of the season.
Tina and Amy Mentor Lindsay Lohan
The Weekend Update hosts give the young star some desperately needed advice. It turns out that behind the scenes, Lorne Michaels and Tina had actually sat Lohan down and given her a talk about straightening her life out.
Bill Kurtis Looping Session
In the show’s 30th season, the national media began to pick up on the important roles women were playing on the show:
Jimmy Fallon had left the show after the previous season, moving on to a career in movies. As he said in this interview, he “wanted to be the next Dana Carvey. It was my obsession.”
Instead of a special commemorating the show’s thirtieth year, NBC ran a documentary looking back at SNL’s first five years. The Los Angeles Times reviewed the documentary here, with some predictions about where the show is going after three decades on the air:
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also reviewed the documentary:
Shortly after Season 30 began, show creator Lorne Michaels received the Mark Twain Prize for humor:
Season 30 will always be known as the “Ashlee Simpson season,” as she was caught lip-syncing during her musical performance. Her father blamed it on acid reflux.
In 2005, long time SNL writer Herb Sargent passed away. R.I.P.
