'Wasn't That Special' Season 19 Clips Package
As always, for those who have signed up for the podcast at the Executive Producer level, we send out notable video and newspaper clips that aided us in preparing for the episode. Below are some of the Saturday Night Live sketches and media clips we reference throughout the episode, to enhance the listening process.
So please help keep the podcast advertisement-free and upgrade to the Executive Producer level, which will keep these emails coming in the future!
(Although if you want to support us at a lower level and want to just hear the shows, you can do that, too!)
Here are some of the materials we discuss throughout the Season Nineteen episode:
(Side note: the best sketch of the season was the highly offensive “Amazing Time Savers” sketch starring Heather Locklear, which is only available on TikTok - for obvious reasons.)
Total Bastard Airlines
Buh-bye.
Sexy Cakes
A great actor committing to a part and playing it straight, rather than mugging for laughs. Imagine that!
The Herlihy Boy
One of the podcast’s more divisive sketches. Christian loved it, Scot…not so much.
Kim Basinger’s Type
It’s basically a Chris Farley Show, so why not just call it that? Farley at his sweetest.
Blossom
Melanie Hutsell has recently expressed regret about this sketch, in which she portrays Jewish actress Mayim Bialik with a fake nose. Couldn’t be done today.
Lunch Lady Land
Hoagies and grinders.
Gap Girls at the Food Court
David Spade’s memoir includes a full chapter about this sketch. The line about them all wearing the same clothes days later seems improvised, but actually was planned in dress rehearsal.
Mistaken Roommate
Rob Schneider pretends he is a woman in order to live in a female dorm. Could never be done today.
Wave Starter
A good Jeff Goldblum performance.
Subway Guitarist
Farley and Sandler get all the notoriety, but Schneider had chops - more than people typically remember.
Matt Foley: Scared Straight
Jay Mohr discusses this sketch at length in his 2004 book “Gasping for Airtime.” Mohr said he had pills in his hand he needed to take for anxiety while on screen, but you can see he has nothing in his hands at the beginning of the sketch. The plan was also for everyone to tackle Farley at the end of the sketch so he couldn’t deliver his final line, but Farley was so strong, he threw everyone off him like trash bags and was able to run back into the room and deliver his line.
Whitewater Explained
Any sketch with Cindy Crawford in it is worth sharing.
Prior to the season running, the critics were already saying the show needed to update the formula:
And during the season, critics began to pounce on the season’s lackluster performance:
And more:
And more:
The show also took heat for the hosting performance by Martin Lawrence, whose monologue included a bit on how to “wash your ass properly.”
And the episode featuring Nancy Kerrigan got a lot of attention (although it is unclear why Kerrigan, who was the victim of assault, needed to “fix her image.”)

Only thing I can think of for the Kerrigan articles is IIRC she probably was seen acting in a damsel in distress manner. I mean yes her knee was bashed with a blunt object but…well that’s all I got really.
I can see her people trying to add to her Andy Warhol time with it, but yeah that isn’t “rehabbing an image” in the way it would be if Tanya Harding was hosting instead.
