Saturday Night Live has always been dependent in some ways on the cultural and political events surrounding the show, but never was that more true than in Season 23.
I was pleasantly surprised that you began with a discussion of where you were with the show at the time it airs because this was EXACTLY what I was curious about for these years of the show.
Maybe more for a podcast called “How About That: 130 Years of The Evil Em…I mean New York Yankees” but…actually chalk this up to unreliable narration because the dates are not adding up…
Anyway, listening to a recently released audiobook on the 1998 Yankees. And the story about David Wells’ Perfecto is prefaced by a night into the early morning hours drinking with Jimmy Fallon, corroborated with a 2022 discussion Fallon had about it on The Tonight Show with guest Adam Sandler.
Its stated in book that the drinking session was to postgame the season finale, which Wells attended. That was on May 9th. While Wells’ one hell of a Perfect Game while nursing one hell of a hangover was indeed a Sunday afternoon, it was a week later, May 17th.
Which is concerned eyebrow inducing if you want to wonder about both Wells and Fallon drinking hard alcohol (vodka) until 4 in the morning when Wells was scheduled to pitch a few hours later! I mean postgaming a live show’s season ender is one thing 😳👀
BTW, look out for a possible unreliable narrator issue with Tracy Morgan. Listening to a podcast discus Tracy explaining how Brian Fellow came to be, and it was in part due to Norm and Robert Smigel wanting to “showcase” a vocal inflection Morgan often got tripped up on.
While Smigel is still around through 2008, seems odd that Macdonald would have a hand in a character’s gestation when it debuts either a year or a year and few months after his firing (a “Brian Fellow” is a sports reporter WU bit a few months before Safari Planet sketch debuts) Hmmmmmm.

Surprised you didn’t mention Norm’s mid-season sacking in these notes.
Well, we do spend ample time on it during the show!

Oh and in regards to that new writer named Fey? To quote a big movie from the next year “We shall watch your career with great interest!” ;)
