By the fall of 1990, the core cast of Saturday Night Live had spent four full seasons together, and clearly Executive Producer Lorne Michaels thought it was time for new blood.
Victoria seems to get a boost in airtime at the start of the season from the loss of Nora Dunn in the cast. She gets on the same level of prominence, if not eclipsing Jan before Julia Sweeney hits it big with Pat.
Yeah Mike on SNL always seems to be in his own bubble. Foreshadowing a bit but I do recall he did a Wayne sketch with JUST WAYNE after Dana leaves. I don’t group him in with the late 80s cast nor do I consider him one of the Bad Boys. From time to time, though, I do notice a nice Second City bond between Mike, Tim, and Farley.
Oh speaking of Lovitz’s choices in projects, I watched his episodes of the History of The World in 6 Glasses and he delivers a couple of bad quips. They get followed up by shots of Jon on a red carpet with Akyroyd saying something like “regardless of that joke, keep in mind Jon has had a long and distinguished career in comedy” But if you see the titles on the step & repeat Jon is in front of…you might want to question Jon’s project selection processes!
Not sure if that was meant to be a legit joke on Jon, or the movie logos were what FNC could afford/had the rights to show on their streaming service, which they legitimately could have been, I forget the titles and don’t feel like going back to check right now. But either way it’s still very chuckle worthy!
Did Larry David and crew NOT watch Big Stein’s episode when they were considering him to be himself on Seinfeld!? No wonder Larry had to take over as the voice!
Something I think about is how much of the in studio audience knows someone making a cameo shot on the show. The Super Fans sketch years later when they had Ditka himself on was one of those times.
Obviously the vast majority of people watching, in the vein diagram overlap of NFL and SNL fans, would know but IDK if most of the audience in the studio watching would be like “Heh, they got the real Coach Mike Ditka for this!” and be more like “Who is that? That can’t be the real guy right?”
I guess Christian is no fan of Chris “Bern me that file on CD” man, as I’m guessing since Richmeister came out during the heyday of Berman’s schtick of the non-sequitur and pop culture reference nickname for athletes. Which is probably why the character had a following.
But I don’t think Rich was as bad as the “home run call” of Yankee “broadcaster” John Sterling. Who will go esoteric and sometimes inspired by musicals for nicknames to shout out after a Yankee hits a homer.
Scot: Indeed. Had a note to talk about this opening sequence (which is not one of my favorites), but did not have time. Did I read Brynn also was an extra in a sketch a few years prior?
Julia Sweeney is so charming. I love the "girl next door" personality she brought to the show. She would struggle later but she got off to a really good start here.

Scot: Missed this comment at the time, but I have a similar Myers thought coming in the S17 episode.

David certainly was watching E6 with Paul Simon when there's a fake ad for a "man bra" inside the Schiller film.
Most Prescient could be MJF’s monologue where Doc and Marty warn him about how bad his show is going to be! ;)
LOL. Good point!

It is quite eye roll inducing.
Quite chilling knowing who Phil is sitting with and that there is actually a reason why her loop earring is moving in his credit sequence spot.

Scot: She's perfectly deployed this season in the sketch with Baldwin as the priest. Equal parts quirky and cute and relatable.
